Nearly half of people now ask AI to find a local business. A year ago it was one in sixteen.

This is the fastest change in how customers find businesses since the smartphone. Most owners have not noticed it yet, because nothing on their end looks different.

Six per cent to forty-five per cent in twelve months. Whatever you think of AI, that is where a growing share of your customers now start.

AI has become the third most-used way people find local businesses, behind Google and Facebook. It has already gone past Yelp and TripAdvisor.

The part nobody expects

The instinct is to treat this as a threat. The data says otherwise.

42% Visitors who arrive from an AI assistant convert better than visitors from anywhere else, by 42%. They also spend longer on the site and look at more pages.

That makes sense when you think about it. Someone who arrives from a search result is still deciding. Someone who arrives from an assistant has already been told you are the answer.

So the traffic is smaller than search today, and worth more per visit.

Why most businesses will miss it

Nothing breaks. No email arrives. Your website looks the same, your phone rings the same amount, and somewhere out of sight an assistant recommends the place down the road instead.

That is the whole problem. There is no alarm for this.

What actually moves the needle

The businesses that get recommended are not the ones with the best marketing. They are the ones an assistant can read:

  • Prices in text. No price, no recommendation. It is the single most common reason a business gets skipped.
  • Facts that agree with each other. Your site, your Google listing and the directories should say the same hours and the same address.
  • Plain answers to real questions. Written the way a customer asks, not the way a brochure is written.
  • A way to actually book or buy. If the assistant cannot see how a customer completes the job, it moves on.

Sources

The useful question is not whether this is happening. It is whether an assistant would send a customer to you today. That takes about two minutes to find out.
